Network
Finds a route across many networks to the right destination. This is where IP addresses live.
Transport
Makes sure everything arrives complete and in order, and sends again whatever goes missing.
Session
Opens, keeps and closes the conversation between two machines.
Presentation
Puts data into a shared form both sides understand: its encoding, compression and encryption.
Application
The software you actually touch: the browser, the app, the website. The formal model ends here.
